old computers

We've got two old computers we don't use anymore, because they're slow and low on memory. But, both still have files that I need to access. Both have broken CD drives, one is old enough to have a 3.5" floppy drive (but it is also broken), so the only realistic way to access the files is via our home network.

What I really want to do is copy them all onto an external drive, but I don't have one with enough space available. So, the project sits and the towers gather dust.

My task for next week is to aquire a large-enough external hard drive, copy all the files I need and dispose of the towers. Will update.

Here's a good hard drive for ya: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136321. 1TB for $100.

I have a USB hard drive cable for connecting any drive to any computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812240006.

Also, I use a Windows Home Server, keeping all my data on the server. Then it's available from any computer in the house. I also back the server up to an external drive, then keep that drive in the garage, so it's safe in case of fire or whatever.

you can get a terabite HD on the cheap now-a-days! Splurge. Make the husband do it, men love buying electronics!
